Spirit Airlines shut down on May 2nd. For many Canadians living in or moving to Costa Rica, that felt like a setback. But the replacement may actually be an upgrade.
Porter Airlines has officially announced direct flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela. The route launches December 2, 2026 and operates four times per week through April 30, 2027.
No layover in Miami. No connection through Houston. You board in Toronto and land in San José.
1. What Makes This Different from Other Airlines
Porter is not a budget carrier. The experience on this route reflects that.
Porter flies the Embraer E195-E2, a modern 132-seat jet with no middle seats. Every passenger gets free Wi-Fi, complimentary beer and wine served in actual glasses, and premium snacks included. This is not a budget carrier experience.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Aircraft | Embraer E195-E2 |
| Seats | 132 seats — no middle seat on any row |
| Wi-Fi | Free for all passengers |
| Drinks | Complimentary beer and wine served in real glasses |
| Snacks | Premium snacks included |
| Starting fare (approx.) | CAD 304 |
2. Why This Matters Specifically for the Central Valley
Most direct Canadian flights landed in Liberia — not San José. That just changed.
Until now, most direct Canadian flights landed in Liberia, which serves Guanacaste and the beach regions. If you live in or around San José, Escazú, Santa Ana, Atenas, or anywhere in the Central Valley, you were routing through the United States anyway.
This route changes that. You arrive directly into Juan Santamaría, 20 minutes from San José, without setting foot in a US airport.
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, Costa Rica welcomed over 146,000 Canadian visitors by air, a 27.5 percent increase year over year. The demand is real and growing.
3. Who Is This Route For
Three specific groups benefit directly from this route.
If you already live in the Central Valley and visit family in Canada during the year, this eliminates the US connection entirely. No more ESTA requirements, no more customs queues in Miami, no more missed connections.
For Canadians considering a move to the Central Valley, the availability of a direct connection to Toronto changes the calculus. You can visit Costa Rica for a scouting trip, or return to Canada for medical appointments and family visits, without the friction of a US transit.
Many Canadian retirees in Costa Rica spend part of the year in Canada to maintain provincial health coverage or stay close to family. A direct non-stop route makes that movement significantly easier and removes one of the most common friction points of the split-living model.
